Fireplace Screens with Doors

If you want your fireplace to be completely sealed off from the room, whether for safety or decorative reasons, consider getting a screen that has doors. These screens are not freestanding, they are mounted to the outside of the fireplace surround and fixed firmly in place. There are many decorative styles to choose from, you could have one with glass doors or metal, arched or square, reflective or see through.

As they are a mounted unit they tend to cost more than a freestanding model. For instance a good screen with glass doors and having a solid brass exterior runs about $1600. These can be considerably more than a typical screen, but they also add a boost of elegance to your hearth and room in general. It is possible to buy them for just a few hundred dollars, but those are not custom made and you would need to do most of the installation yourself to keep costs down.

Many of them are custom built by hand to fit your exact fireplace opening. They can fit into fireplace openings which are rectangle, semi arch, full arch or square. Upwards of 25 or more finish options are available. They will often be very sleek with frames that have small overlaps and are not sticking out away from the hearth in an obstrusive manner. The glass is usually tempered and obviously made to withstand significant heat coming from the fireplace. These work for standard wood burning fireplaces, as well as electric and gas fireplaces.

When I was a kid our fireplace had built in doors like this. We would grab a handle at the top of either of the two center doors and pull. It would open one side, then we'd open the other. It was almost always necessary to open both doors in order to put a new log on the fire, but if you were just stoking the fire you could get away with opening just one door. They were a bit noisy, but I think a little WD-40 was all we needed. Today's designs are quiet, sleek and beautiful.
